SKINCARE INGREDIENT TREND- ACTIVATED CHARCOAL

CHARCOAL ISN’T JUST FOR YOUR BARBECUE ANYMORE!

But Why?
The general idea is this;
Activated charcoal attaches itself to toxins in a process called adsorption  thereby “detoxifying” the skin and body of said toxins. It is well known that due to it’s molecular structure activated charcoal does have a very high surface area, making it all the better to attract and hold toxins.

Is It True?
I personally can not find any clinical studies on the skincare side of things, however I did find this health study which says “Activated charcoal dressings that contain silver, control infection and reduce healing times, eliminating bacterial barriers” Which is not too shabby and I can totally see how this could relate to treating your skin. I also came across this info on emedicinehealth.com stating that activated charcoal does not irritate the mucous membranes so it is safe to say you can use it topically. My advice though is to proceed with caution especially if you have sensitive skin or broken skin lesions.
